The Zoerman Clarke building was one of Jackson's first factories, being built next to Michigan's first state penitentiary in order to utilize prison labor. Beginning in the late 1800's, prisoners were moved through underground tunnels where they would sometimes be worked to death making farm implements, and coining the neighborhood as Jackson's Fork and Hoe District.
Started by two brothers, the two were divided on the labor conditions in the factory. With a conscience, Clarke banned his brother, Zoerman, from the family business. Zoerman promised his brother that he would always haunt the walls of The Zoerman-Clarke building. While he has kept that promise today, Clarke has the last laugh as Zoerman's spirit is tortured by each prisoner he worked to death there.
