Step into the haunted past of St. Augusitine with Old City Ghosts to explore the history behind such locations as, Harry’s Seafood Bar and Grille. Located on the site of a home originally built in the mid-1700s, it’s filled with the joys and tragedies of Juana and Francisco de Porras and their nine children. The property changed hands over centuries, surviving British occupation and two devastating fires, the last of which in 1887 claimed the life of Bridget Barry, a servant who perished trying to save her belongings. Today, Bridget’s presence is still felt in unsettling ways: the smell of smoke often fills the air, burners flare uncontrollably, and her apparition has startled staff, sometimes preceding accidents like burns or broken glass. But she’s not the only paranormal presence here, while most spirits here seem benign, Bridget’s tragic end makes her the most active—and perhaps the most unsettling—ghost in the restaurant.
Just a few blocks away, A1A Aleworks sits atop a far older mystery uncovered in 2016 after Hurricane Matthew damaged the property. Beneath the floorboards, archaeologists discovered human remains—adults and children alike—dating back to the 16th century when the site was home to Nuestra Señora de Los Remedios, the first parish church in St. Augustine. Parishioners were buried beneath the church floor until its destruction by Sir Francis Drake and subsequent natural disasters.
The Alehouse staff report frequent paranormal activity attributed to these long-forgotten souls, particularly children. Customers and employees alike hear ghostly laughter and whispers, and items regularly go missing only to reappear weeks later. One chilling sighting involved a worker seeing a faceless boy in tattered clothes who vanished as quickly as he appeared.
From ghostly figures and inexplicable sounds to stories of heartbreak and restless souls, you’ll uncover the dark and mysterious side of this historic city.
